On 12 May, the “Hands-on Day: Technical Careers” (Praxistag technische Berufe) gave Year 9 students from lower secondary, intermediate secondary, and comprehensive schools the chance to get a practical introduction to industrial and technical career fields through first-hand insights from companies and apprentices.

Whether electrical engineering, metalworking, automation, scaffolding, or road construction: in six different workshops, the young people got to work with tools themselves, build robots, machine metal, or wire up circuits. It wasn’t just about watching, but above all about joining in and trying things out. The participating students got to know offerings from IFÜREL EMSR-Technik, ADAMS Armaturen, VULKAN Group, Iqony, Bilfinger, and the HEITKAMP Unternehmensgruppe, and could try out technical apprenticeship occupations directly in practice. The hands-on day was coordinated by the zdi network MINT.HERne.

A particular highlight was the direct exchange with the apprentices from the participating companies. They offered authentic insights into their day-to-day training, shared their experiences, and answered the students’ questions.

I left the hashtags in German on purpose, since they link to existing German-language LinkedIn feeds and changing them would break that connection. If you’d prefer English hashtags for an international audience, I can swap them – though they’d then point to different (or empty) search results.
