So that students unsure about their studies aren’t left out in the cold: Counseling services from the IHK & HWK

The IHK Mittleres Ruhrgebiet offers a consultation hour every last Thursday of the month from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m.

Are you having second thoughts about your decision to pursue a degree, or have you already withdrawn from school? Would you like to learn something practical and enter the workforce right away? Then the IHK is the perfect place for you! Andrea Koch from the IHK advises students who are unsure about their studies or have dropped out on the possibilities of dual vocational training and continuing education modules that build on that foundation.
After all: Apprenticeship + Continuing Education = a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree!

What professions are involved?

The IHK Mittleres Ruhrgebiet is responsible for over 200 apprenticeship programs in the commercial, industrial-technical, and service sectors.

The consultation hours take place every last Thursday of the month in person at the IHK offices, from 2:00–3:00 p.m. (in compliance with applicable social distancing and hygiene rules). The consultation can also be conducted digitally. Be sure to register in advance by email:

The skilled trades and the associated dual vocational training program offer a wide range of opportunities, career paths, and options for a secure future.
There are many good reasons to choose a dual vocational training program in the skilled trades:

  • Job security after a 3- or 3.5-year apprenticeship
  • With a high school diploma, you can shorten your apprenticeship by at least 12 months
  • With advanced training to become a master craftsman, you can pursue a degree in your specific field, run your own business, or take on responsibility as a trainer
  • Relevant academic credits can be applied toward the apprenticeship
  • According to the German Qualifications Framework, a “Meister” qualification and a bachelor’s degree are classified as equivalent qualifications
  • Managers with a “Meister” qualification are already in high demand – so don’t wait any longer and take control of your future!
